History and heritage

Where soil, travel and stories meet

Nordre Ullern lies in the heart of Røyse in Hole municipality, close to Bønsnes church and the historic Pilgrim Route toward Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim.

The name Ullern is linked to the Norse god Ull and the word “vin”, meaning meadow or grassland. The name can be understood as “Ull’s meadow”. Historic spellings include Ullaryn, Ullæsyn, Wllerenn, Uldrenn and Ullarin.

The original Ullern farm was eventually divided into Øvre Ullern, Nedre Ullern and Nordre Ullern. The farm has long been connected to agricultural life, old travel routes and family lines across Røyse.

The correct name of the farm is Nordre Ullern, locally also Nordre Ullarin. The name “Thorstad” was once used privately by the family in a newspaper article from 1983, but is not continued as the farm name.
“This is where it began.”
